CELEBRATING OUR 21st YEAR!!

I want to thank all of you for your help on Watershed Day. Some of the "wins" that we accomplished include:

bulletVolunteers (20 car loads of folks) from the Tennessee Coal Association, OSM, UT, TU, ASCE, Anderson County, etc. removed about 3 dump truck loads of trash from Beech Grove Falls and other areas in the watershed.
bulletAn ecology class from the College of the Atlantic in Maine saw our web site and scheduled a trip to participate in Watershed Day. The 15 college students and their professor (Ken Cline ksc@ecology.coa.edu ) arrived early in Lake City and spent the day fishing, going on Bug Hunts, watching the fish shocking, collecting water/benthic samples from Coal Creek, picking up trash (including a toilet seat), mining information from the exhibitors, etc.
bulletAllison Lockwood and her friends from the ASCE student chapter of UT spent the day in the Briceville Public Library and Friendship Center. The library/friendship center staff told me that they were "thrilled and blessed to have such fine assistance".
bulletVolunteers from TDEC/TWRA/TVA/TU and people fishing found numerous species of fish present in Coal Creek including trout.
bulletThe Bug Hunts were a smash with the kids and adults. Most never dreamed that the creeks contain so much aquatic life.
bulletThe Boy Scouts from Lake City and the PTO from Briceville fed us and provided drinks.
bulletSeveral students at both locations are now "hooked" on fly tying and fishing.
bulletMargy White, Chief of Staff from OSM in Washington, got to see first hand the task we face to improve the quality of life in the Coal Creek watershed. We got to see one community that has built a low cinder block cribwall across a small creek for their water supply. Numerous 1-inch diameter black pipes lead from the cinder block cribwall to homes. The irony of the situation is that Coal Creek is located in the same county (Anderson County) as Oak Ridge, which is one of the leading technological centers in the world. She provided valuable information on potential funding for abandoned mined land reclamation work.
bulletRex Lynch (Anderson County executive) provided valuable insight into the potential economic benefits for residents of the watershed that will come from initiatives in the schools and reclamation of abandoned mined lands.
bulletAt the end of Watershed Day, we took trash that had been collected in Fraterville back to the dumpster at Briceville Elementary School. Jonathon and Richard, two of the most enthusiastic students who participated in Watershed Day, invited us to come back next week for a repeat of Watershed Day. They said "we had fun and want to do it again". They also liked the prizes that were donated by the Southern Appalachia Railroad Museum, Cracker Barrel, and Trout Unlimited.
