The Coal Creek Watershed Foundation was invited to Claxton School’s Family Fun Literacy and Social Studies Night on 23 January 2020. Barry Thacker PE (in the character of Coal Creek’s Welsh coal miner David R. Thomas) presented historic events of the Coal Creek War and the Fraterville and Cross Mountain Mine explosions. Barry had several of the students participate by reading the farewell messages of Jacob Vowell and Powell Harmon. Some of the visitors had family from the Coal Creek area who were coal miners. We were invited by our longtime friend Gladys Webb Stooksbury who we met at Briceville School in 2000 and was part of the literacy staff there through 2009. Gladys was in the character as a slave on the Underground Railroad. We also were excited to see 2008 Coal Creek Scholar recipient Jessica Lynn McKinney (Hayes) who is a teacher at Claxton School. Lots of historic characters were part of this program. | |
