COAL CREEK BANK STABILIZATION PROJECT
Saturday, September 22, 29, and October 6, 2001
President Bush told us that we can honor those who perished in the September 11th terrorist attacks by getting back to our normal lives. On three consecutive Saturdays, over 100 volunteers took his advice. We completed 540 linear feet of a rock-filled gabion wall that will stabilize the toe of a steep bank adjacent to three homes in Briceville. Here are the steps in the process: (Click on image to enlarge.)
STEP
1.
Gabion wire baskets are assembled.
STEP
2.
A backhoe excavates a flat area at the toe of the steep bank.
STEP
3.
Filter fabric is installed on the flat area and the gabion baskets are
wired to the adjacent baskets.
STEP
4.
Rockfill (4" to 9" size) is dumped adjacent to the gabion
baskets.
STEP 5.
Volunteers fill buckets with rock to fill baskets. Where access
permits, the backhoe fills the baskets directly from the top of the slope.
STEP
6.
After the baskets are filled with rockfill, the top is wired to complete
the installation.

Rainfall
on October 6 raised the level of Coal Creek which meant that we had to get
our feet wet. Nevertheless, we finished the gabion wall on schedule
and within budget.
The
last step in the process was to place a large, flat boulder at the
downstream end of the wall to reduce the potential for scour at this
location.

Completed project
We need volunteers on Saturday, October 27 to install erosion control mats to enable the slopes above the gabion wall to be revegetated. We will meet at Briceville School at 8:00 a.m. to sign everyone in and begin work. We hope to see you there!
Work on Saturday, October 27 to revegetate the stream banks and improve the health of the Coal Creek will be part of Coal Creek Health Days where volunteer doctors, dentists, and medical personnel will provide free exams to residents as described at www.coalcreekaml.com/MakeDifference.htm.
