CELEBRATING OUR 21st YEAR!!
Steve Allen, PE with TVA will be making a presentation at a Briceville community meeting on Monday, July 10th. The meeting will be held at Briceville Elementary School and will begin at 7:00 pm. After a presentation on flooding issues in Coal Creek, Steve will be available to answer questions. Steve was involved in the original channel construction and monitoring in the 1970's by TVA. He assisted with the recent efforts to develop flood prevention measures as an alternative to redredging of Coal Creek. Steve participated in both our Watershed Day and Deadwood Removal Day events. I consider Steve to be the leading authority on flooding in Coal Creek and encourage all CCWF volunteers to attend his presentation in Briceville.
I met with Roger Foster, Executive VP of Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing Company (CCMM), the major landowner in the watershed. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the reclamation of abandoned mine land on CCMM property and to explore developing a closer working relationship between CCMM and CCWF. Mr. Foster was highly complimentary of the work done last Saturday to remove deadwood and debris at the bridges. He concurs that the buildup of deadwood and debris at the bridges is a major cause of flooding.
We developed a list of steps to follow in the work on abandoned mine land sites. His requests were prudent and reasonable. I will prepare a proposal to CCMM documenting the steps to follow in the reclamation process.
Mark Messenbaugh, from the Gore 2000 campaign, has invited me to make a presentation at the Democratic National Committee Platform meeting in St. Louis next Thursday. Mark was at our Deadwood Removal Day event on Saturday. He believes that what we are doing in Coal Creek can serve as a model for other joint government / grass-roots efforts. I accepted. A draft of the INFORMATION SHEET HANDOUT I will distribute at the meeting in St. Louis is available for review.
Barry Thacker, PE
